Trevor Youdale was born in 1970 in Australia. It was in Canada, and importantly, the west coast environment, that he developed his formal approach to drawing with rectangular formats, a subjective muted palette, and grided compositions of responsive, expressionistic line. Youdale considers 2004 as the first appearance of his mature work- distinguished by understated, monochromatic and sensuous qualities. His first exhibition was presented at Winchester Galleries in 2005. In 2006, he began constructing his drawings with coloured ink. He is inspired by the work of Brice Marden, Yves Gaucher, and Rembrandt. Drawing, for Youdale, is an intimate experience of forging and layering subtle tonal relationships and lines, which is consummated in a harmonious, emotional image.
