“Nova Albion,” created by Victoria sculptor Darcy Gould, was inspired by Samuel Bawlf’s book, The Secret Voyage of Sir Frances Drake. Under the patronage of Queen Elizabeth I, Drake sailed around the world from 1577 to 1580. Drake said he went north to the area where San Francisco is now. There, he said he founded the first English Colony called “Nova Albion” (New England). But Samuel Bawlf was suspicious of this report and argues in his book that Drake actually landed at Vancouver Island. This unique sculpture, imbedded with 16th century symbolism and intrigue, may be viewed at Winchester Galleries Humboldt Valley, 796 Humboldt Street.
