Mowry Baden graduated with a BFA from Pomona College and an MA from Stanford University.  “Baden began making sculpture in the late 1960s, focusing on works that tested the viewer’s internal sensory data. … (His) interest was not in creating objects that would involve, as he put it, a 'stand back and look at it' approach, but rather works that required the viewer to test the apparatus physically in order to experience it" ("Mowry Baden," Lisa Baldissera, the Canada Council for the Arts, 2006). Baden has continued to make interactive sculpture and is recognized internationally for that genre.  He has also had an influential teaching career – including at the University of Victoria from 1975 to 1997.  The Art Gallery of Greater Victoria has published several excellent catalogues in conjunction with major exhibitions of his work, and his teaching was highlighted in an article in Canadian Art, Winter 2010/11.  The National Gallery of Canada, which houses his journals, is one of many public institutions and private collections that own his sculpture.  Mowry Baden received a Governor General’s Award in Visual and Media Arts in 2006.
